Photodynamic And Epilation With X-rays
Dr. Pelin KOÇYİĞİTa
aDermatoloji AD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Photodynamic and X ray epilation are rarely used treatment modalities for hair removal. The effects of radiation on hair are well known since the first discovery of X rays by Roentgen. Epilation by radiation had been widely used for cosmetic and therapeutic purposes in the beginning of 1900’s but determination of serious long term side effects such as radiodermatitis and more importantly radiation related malignancies had led to rapid abandonment of the method. Although modern radiotherapy devices and treatment protocols are available today, X ray epilation is still not a preferred method when profit-harm ratio is taken into account.
Photodynamic therapy on the other hand, is an evolving treatment modality which has extending indications in dermatology. The use of photodynamic therapy for hair removal is new and is still experimental. The basic principle of the method is to cause selective photochemical destruction in the hair follicles by topical application of a photosensitizing agent which is then activated by nonionizing radiation. Photodynamic epilation seems to be a promising method as it gives successful results in all skin types and hair colors with minimum side effects. Keywords: X-rays, radiation, photodynamic therapy, ALA, epilation.Turkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2006, 2(52):46-48
