Dr. Başak KANDİ COŞKUN,a Dr. Demet ÇİÇEKa
aDermatoloji AD, Fırat Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ELAZIĞ In human skin, there are 5 million hair follicle approximately. Moreover, in hairy skin, in eyelash and in eyebrow there are 100.000 hair follicle. Matured anagen hair follicles like inverted wine glass. They contain cylindrical structured from inside to outside like an onion. Follicular dermal papilla locate the core of this multi-cylindrical structure. There are 8 concentric structures compose hair follicle. Each of this cylindrical contents represents various stage of differentiation.
Outer root sheath is attached with epidermis and it can configure it due to stem cells. Main functions of outer root sheath are to being as a stem cell and energy (glycogen) storage. It has also been thought that it is supporting inner root sheath and hair body and leading for hair growth.
Although hair follicle is the most peripheral organ in mammalian body, it has overly vascular network. Dermal and subcutaneous vascular network is structuring like a basket. There are numerous of shunts between arterioles, capillaries and venules.
Doctors, anatomists and zoologists are interested in the structure of hair follicles for a long time. The development of hair follicles contains eight different stages. But the molecular basis of this development is still unknown. It is not clear understood to beginning signal of critically follicle development. Keywords: Hair follicle biology, functional anatomy of hair follicle, morphogenesis of hair, hair cycle, immunology of hair follicleTurkiye Klinikleri J Int Med Sci 2006, 2(52):5-12
